Prehab: Rehab Before Surgery

Most people are aware that after a major surgery or injury, physical therapy rehab is expected in order to feel your best. However, the concept of prehab is not as familiar. Prehab is exactly what it sounds like: rehab before surgery. Not only is prehab beneficial in optimizing the surrounding musculature of the affected limb prior to surgery, it can prove beneficial in reducing the total rehab time frame. Prehab also helps familiarize patients with necessary safety protocols, safety equipment and overall safety awareness on an individualized basis. Prehab is a great option to help prepare your body for a better outcome after your surgery than post-surgical rehab alone.

Prehab has also been shown to increase the odds of being discharged from the hospital straight to home (as opposed to a rehabilitation facility) by 73% after a hip or knee replacement!* With prehab, therapists help set their patients up for success not only physically but mentally due to education/awareness regarding the surgical intervention and post-surgical rehab plan help to decrease anxiety and improve confidence in the overall process.

For many patients, prehab can make a world of difference. It’s important to look for a physical therapist with experience in both rehab and prehab if you’re considering a large surgery. Whether you’re interested in learning more about prehab or ready to make an appointment, Lifetime Physical Therapy’s caring therapists are ready to help at your convenience.
